Character Sketch

• Character Sketch: take any of the sonnets and get an image from (online, magazine, personal pictures etc. please cite your sources i.e. url, name of magazine etc.) that you think represents one of a character in one of the poems and write a paragraph on why this image captures the character in your selected poem.

I chose Celia Cruz for “Sonnet 130” because she was not that beautiful but to her husband she was unique. They were in love and that’s what mattered to him. To Pedro Knight (Celia’s husband), she was everything, they were married for 41 years. It was because she died of a cancerous brain tumor. After her death, his health became worst. He suffered a lot for his beloved wife. He died of a heart attack in February 2007. It’s a cute love story like Romeo and Juliet. That’s why I chose her for this Sonnet.

Shakespeare’s expresses himself differently about love in every Sonnet. "Sonnet 130" expresses the strongest commitment to a lover relationship. In "Sonnet 130" he uses simile to compare his mistress to more beautiful things. He expresses his honest feelings towards her.

In "Sonnet 130" the speaker is honest about the way he feels about his mistress. By the use of simile "My mistress's eyes are nothing like the sun;" he gives us an understanding that the sun is more beautiful than her eyes. He is comparing her to the sun. He is not complimenting her at all. There's no way he could ever compare her eyes to such an amazing, brightest, and beautiful thing like the sun. Therefore her eyes are nothing like the sun.

Also by the description he gives us in line three "If snow be white, why then her breasts are dun;” We have a description that she’s not pale. The snow is white and her breasts are tan. Back in the days women were more attractive to men when they were pale. She’s not white as snow, but he still found her attractive.

After the comparisons between his mistress to beautiful things. The speaker concludes his Sonnet "And yet, by heaven, I think my love as rare As any she belied with false compare.", he tries to tells us, that even though his love is rare, he still loves her the way she is. To him, it don't matter how she looks, for him she stills looks unique. He does not give her false compliments, his feelings towards her are honest and he rather be honest. Love is about that, don't matter how the person really looks it's about how you feel about them. That's why I think this Sonnet expresses the strongest commitment to a lover relationship. You have to learn how to love someone for who they are, not for how the look like.
